I love this metaphor of the “authentic swing” as told by Will Smith in The Legend of Bagger Vance. All the coulda’s and woulda’s and shoulda’s that can rob us of being the person we were born to be. When I think of the people who have most inspired me, they are always people who encountered adversity and perhaps succumbed for a while, but then found a pathway back to themselves. Like wandering into a dark forest and getting lost. Some people stay lost for the rest of their lives. In a stuck place, in a bad job or relationship, in a bottle or needle, perhaps unable to let go of the pain of a loss, perhaps unwilling to make commitments or habitually running from responsibility. Other people find a way out of that dark place and discover they are better having gone there, not because the darkness is a good place but the experience of extracting oneself brings an opportunity for growth, self-awareness, and humility.
