Chasing the Sunset

As I write this I am flying home from a work trip to Germany. My itinerary included a short layover in Reykjavik, Iceland. We took off from Reykjavik half an hour before dark and we have been chasing the sunset ever since. A few minutes ago, we began crossing over Greenland. I had no idea these mountains were so harsh! From above they look steep and sharp, like the teeth of a cruel carnivore. I’ll investigate further when I’m next online, but I imagine these mountains must be relatively young to be so jagged.

Wide glaciers can be seen snaking their way toward the ice-infested ocean waters. I am awestruck with the natural scenery outside my window. It’s no wonder that Greenland is the least-densely populated country on the planet. This place looks rugged, frigid, uninhabitable.

A narrow bay appears, like a desperate hand of water clawing its way inward among the mountains. Perhaps it wishes to escape the ocean icebergs to the south. Unexpectedly, I notice strange pink lights on some of the snow caps toward the end of this bay. Was there a town of some sort here at the end of the inlet? No, those aren’t man made lights. They are rays of sunlight streaming through distant ridges then striking the snow here at a shallow angle, creating a luminescent glow. Here is the closing scene of Greenland’s short day. A sunset from 36,000 ft? Why yes it is, and it’s one of the prettiest I’ve seen in a while.

  1. Johnny, It was exactly 2 years ago that I did the same flight with the seemingly never ending sunset. I was just glued to the window for a long period of time. Then I felt the plane’s wing angle change slightly and directly beneath us another jet passed by at about a 60 degree angle to us. It was SUPER close. I asked the pilot about it and he just smiled and blew me off. I think we had a close call.
