Some people take their storage spaces to extremes with ultra organized garages and intensely clean workshops. I respect the attention to detail, and it’s valuable to have every tool visible so it’s easy to spot when something is missing. Alas, I do not have the motivation for this level of order in my garage.
However, the other end of the spectrum – complete lack of organization – is highly frustrating. If I can’t find the tool I need in the moment I need it, I may as well not own it at all.
A basic level of organization and discipline pays dividends. Sufficient organization so when I’m putting something away I know where it goes. And a little bit of discipline too – not in the sense of taking time to put things away – but paying attention when I’m looking for something that’s gone missing … where is my brain looking for it? Where do I expect it to be? Once the item is found, it takes a bit of discipline to put it away in THAT place, so next time it’ll be where I expect.
