The Halloween Hump

My son wore a costume to school today for Halloween. He is a high school sophomore, and he wore a costume last year as a freshman only to discover that virtually no one else in the school wore costumes. This year, he was pretty set against standing out and was not planning to dress up. But the night before Halloween, a friend texted him to say he was going to dress up. My son changed his mind. He chose one of my old costumes (a fisherman with raincoat, rain pants, and rain hat) and wore it to school, knowing he would not be invisible. He came home happy. The costume was a hit and he intimated the fisherman’s hat might have contracted lice because it was worn by nearly every other kid in his classes. (That’s a worry I’ll live with.)

An important lesson. If it’s something you want to do, and you’re worried about standing out, don’t. But if you’re still worried, find a friend to get you over the hump.
