School will teach my kids vocabulary and math, time management and social skills; essential knowledge to conduct oneself in our modern world. In addition parents, teachers, coaches and others who work with youth need to help kids learn what they want to say. Consider the scene in Dead Poet’s Society when Robin Williams quotes Walt Whitman: “That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse … what will your verse be?”
Getting into the right college, and maybe getting into any college, isn’t the point anymore. The point is this: is there an entity that will have trouble living without you when you’re looking to earn a living. (think: scarcity … what skills will you have that will be scarce) Because if there is such an entity and you provide something they can’t get elsewhere, then you’ll be able to earn a living.
So it’s worth asking: what are my kids learning between 3-10pm (after school)? They either need to learn to LEAD or SOLVE PROBLEMS. That’s what they’ll be doing in the new world economy.
