Here’s a fantastic non-word that makes perfect sense when you see it, and feels reasonable when you speak it, but does not actually exist.
Gription
grip · tion /ˈgripSH(ə)n/ noun The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
synonyms: traction, grip, friction, adhesion, purchase (!!)
Example: He had no fear of slipping because his boots had great gription on the ice.
As a youth I was convinced about the efficacy of this non-word, and I made several attempts to bring it into mainstream use – much to the chagrin (and amusement) of friends and family. Alas, without the aid of internet I was thwarted in getting this word to go viral. Had I succeeded it could have joined the ranks of other words that didn’t exist 30 years ago like ‘tweet’, ‘googling’, ‘selfie’, and ‘blogging’!
